2nd Forum for the Future of Agriculture in Europe

17 - 18 March 2009, Brussels, Bibliothèque Solvay

From 17-18 March, 2009 the Forum for the Future of Agriculture (FFA) once again convened at Bibliothèque Solvay in Brussels. Organized by Syngenta and the European Landowners’ Organization (ELO), FFA 2009 sought to address the subject of how we govern and provide finance for food and environmental security against the backdrop of the global economic crisis.

Building on the debate created by the first forum of March 2008 and other important summits which have been held since, the event posed a number of fundamental questions such as:

  • Do we need new structures to better govern and provide finance for food and environmental security?
  • How has the financial crisis affected global trends and prospects for agriculture and the environment?
  • Is Europe doing enough to build its own capacity for food and environmental security?
  • What should be Europe’s role in reforming the structures for governing and financing food and environmental security?
  • Has the world responded effectively to the challenge of food and environmental security, and what should it do next?

Experts including Paul Krugman (Professor of Economics & International affairs, Princeton University), Franz Fischler (former EU Agriculture Commissioner), Marianne Fischer-Boel (EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development) and John Atkin (COO Syngenta) were part of an impressive lineup of leading speakers from EU institutions, European Governments, Industry, NGOs and organizations including the FAO and OECD attending the event.
